When Should I Replace My Oil Tank?

An oil storage tank should last you for a number of years – perhaps even between ten and fifteen and in some cases up to twenty, dependent on the material it is made from and whether it is checked regularly and well maintained.

However, there will definitely come a time when oil tank replacement is unavoidable. In this edition of our blog we will briefly look at the reasons that may be necessary, and we’ll also provide you with a handy checklist of things you can look out for to assist in your decision on whether it’s time to order a replacement from Tanks R Us.

Signs of Damage to your Oil Tank

Imperfections: Bulges, cracks, dents, rust, discolouration are all types of damage which indicate that now is the time for a replacement.

Non-functional gauges: If the gauge and fill points are not performing correctly, it could indicate they are permanently damaged and lead to a dangerous over-fill.

Increase in fuel use: If you find that you are ‘getting through’ more fuel than usual, it could be an indicator that your tank is damaged in some way, and leaking.

Spills and leaks: These can occur around pipework, joints and seals.

Wet spots: These are patches of moisture on the surface of the tank or on the ground beneath it, caused by small holes.

Instability: Your oil tank may have been incorrectly installed and be uneven. If that is the case it would not function at full capacity and could become damaged.

When is it time to replace my oil tank?

If you move in to a property which uses an oil storage tank, you should have it inspected by a professional as soon as you can. This will help you quickly establish whether a replacement is needed.

If you already live in a property at which you have been responsible for having a new oil tank installed in the past, you should always look out for the things we mentioned in the previous section. If you come across any of them then, once again, have a professional inspect the system to ascertain whether a replacement (or repair) is the right course of action.
