Winter Care for AdBlue: How to Store and Use AdBlue Safely in Cold Weather

Author: Jack Dunn

AdBlue is essential for keeping modern diesel vehicles compliant with emissions standards, but winter conditions can make handling and storing it more challenging. Low temperatures affect both the quality and usability of AdBlue, so it is worth putting proper safeguards in place, especially if you manage a fleet, rely on diesel equipment, or store AdBlue in bulk.

Why AdBlue Needs Extra Attention in Winter

AdBlue begins to freeze at –11°C. While this does not damage the solution, repeated freezing and thawing can affect storage containers and dispensing systems if they are not designed for harsh conditions. Low temperatures also slow the flow rate, making it harder to dispense.
Vehicle SCR systems can heat frozen AdBlue automatically, but your storage infrastructure needs its own protection.

How to Store AdBlue Correctly in Cold Conditions

To maintain purity and performance:

  1. Keep it within the correct temperature range: Ideally store AdBlue between 0°C and 25°C. Below freezing, it will solidify, and above 30°C it can degrade more quickly.
  2. Use insulated or heated storage: If you store AdBlue on-site, ensure your tank or IBC is insulated or located indoors. Heated bunded tanks are the safest option for long-term winter use.
  3. Protect it from contamination: Dirt, fuel, or water will compromise AdBlue immediately. Use sealed dispensing systems and only approved containers.
  4. Avoid unnecessary exposure: Do not leave drums or canisters outside unprotected. Keep them dry, shaded, and away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes.

Using AdBlue Safely in Cold Weather

Do not apply external heat sources (such as open flames or space heaters) to thaw frozen AdBlue. Let it warm naturally or rely on heated storage.

  • Always use the correct dispensing equipment to avoid contamination.
  • Check levels earlier than usual in winter, as slower flow or freezing can mask low stock.
  • Inspect pumps and pipework for frost damage, leaks, or stiff components.
